Conditions of the German Rail Pass
- General conditions for everyone
Only non-European residents can travel with a German Rail Pass. Read more.
A German Rail Pass is valid for travel with participating train companies. Read more.
You need to activate your Pass at a train station in Germany within 11 months of the issue date.
A 1st class Pass is valid on both 1st and 2nd class coaches. 2nd class Passes are only valid in 2nd class coaches.

To travel with a Youth Pass, you must be aged from 12 up to and including 27 on the start date of the Pass.
- Additional conditions for Adult / Twin travelers
With a Twin Pass, 2 adults traveling together save up to 50% on the second adult. Both traveler names are printed on a single discounted Twin Pass, so you need to travel together.
- Additional conditions for Family travelers
Children under 6 travel for free and do not need a Pass.
Children aged 6 to 11 travel for free with a Child Pass. A child must be accompanied at all times by at least one person with an Adult Pass. This doesn't have to be a family member and can be anyone over 18.
Up to two children can travel with one adult. For example, when two adults are traveling, they can take four children with them.
If more than two children are traveling with one adult, a separate Youth Pass needs to be purchased for the additional children.
Travelers aged 12 to 27 can travel with a Youth Pass.
Am I eligible to use the Pass?
You can travel with a German Rail Pass if you're a non-European resident. Residents of Europe, including Turkey and Russia, are not eligible, but can instead travel with an Interrail Pass.
If you are a young traveler (aged 27 or younger) or a couple traveling together, you qualify for discounted prices. Children aged 11 or younger travel for free!
Where can I travel?
With a German Rail Pass you can enjoy unlimited rail travel throughout Germany. The pass is accepted on all trains and IC buses operated by the national railway company, Deutsche Bahn (DB).
If that's not enough, you can use the German Rail Pass to connect to cities outside of Germany, including Austria, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Poland and Czechia.
Anything else I should know?
Yes! A big advantage of exploring Germany by rail is that most trains do not require you to reserve seats. All you need to do is hop on and show your rail pass. For some international routes you'll need an advance reservation.
Before using the German Rail Pass, you need activate it. You can do this by taking it to the ticket office of any major railway station in Germany.
